Garlic Supplements Lower Blood Pressure

Garlic supplements may lower blood pressure just as effectively as some drugs used to treat hypertension can, according to a new research review.

"Supplementation with garlic preparations may provide an acceptable alternative or complementary treatment option for hypertension," Dr. Karin Ried and colleagues from The University of Adelaide in South Australia write.

Research to date on garlic and blood pressure has had "inconclusive" results, they note, while the last meta-analysis - in which the results of several studies are analyzed collectively -- only included studies done up until 1994.

To provide an updated perspective, Ried and her team included more recently published studies in their analysis, identifying 11 studies in which the patients were randomly assigned to garlic or placebo. In most studies, participants given garlic took it in powdered form, as a standardized supplement. Doses ranged from 600 mg to 900 mg daily, which study participants took for 12 to 23 weeks.

When the researchers pooled the data from the trials, they found that garlic reduced systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) by 4.6 mm Hg, on average. An analysis limited to people with high blood pressure showed garlic reduced systolic blood pressure by 8.4 mm Hg, on average, and diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) by 7.3 mm Hg. The higher a person's blood pressure -was at the beginning of the study, the more it was reduced by taking garlic.

The effects were similar to those of widely used drugs for treating hypertension, for example beta blockers, which reduce systolic blood pressure by 5 mm Hg, and ACE inhibitors, which produce an 8 mm Hg average drop in systolic blood pressure, the researchers note.

The 600 mg to 900 mg dosage used in the studies is equivalent to 3.6 mg to 5.4 mg of garlic's active ingredient, allicin, Ried and her team point out. A fresh clove of garlic contains 5 mg to 9 mg of allicin.

In the population as a whole, they note, reducing systolic blood pressure by an average of 4 to 5 points and diastolic blood pressure by 2 to 3 points could cut the risk of heart disease and heart disease-related death by up to 20 percent.

More research is needed to determine whether garlic supplementation might have a long-term effect on heart disease risk, the researchers conclude. Copyright Reuters

Is Your Thyroid Aging You?

When a person loses a majority of the function of the thyroid gland, especially if it occurs rapidly, some obvious and immediate symptoms develop:

* Sudden unexplained weight gain or great difficulty losing fat
* Severe fatigue and frequent exhaustion
* Depression and gloominess
* Frequent constipation
* Menstrual irregularities - especially heavy bleeding with periods
* Dry, coarse skin that is pale and itchy.
* Puffiness of the face, especially in postmenopausal women
* Dry, coarse, thinning hair (also losing the outer third of your eyebrows)
* Intolerance to cold

These are symptoms of fully blown hypothyroidism but, increasingly, the medical profession is recognizing that many people have lesser degrees of thyroid hormone deficiency, called subclinical hypothyroidism.

These patients can have much more subtle symptoms and, frighteningly, mostly normal test results.

My wife and I have noticed, for instance, that there seems to be a greater number of middle-aged and older women with thinning hair than in the past. I wonder if that’s a sign that widespread fluoridation of drinking water is suppressing the function of thyroid hormone.

The standard measure for diagnosing the lesser, “subclinical” form of hypothyroidism is having a TSH level higher than 4 milliunits per liter (mU/ L) in the presence of a normal free T4 level.

The subclinical signs of hypothyroidism include the following:

Muscle spasms and fatigue, hair loss (thinning of the hair) especially in women, elevated cholesterol, triglycerides and Lp(a) levels and weight gain.

Once upon a time, people measured the condition by simply taking their temperature upon waking. A low body temperature, at or below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, indicates low metabolism. There is still a convincing argument for this method. The problem, of course, is understanding exactly why. Low metabolism could result from aging mitochondria, which are the cell’s power plants, or more simply a lack of regular exercise or a chronic illness. Of course, some of these are secondary to low thyroid function as well.

What I find distressing, as do many patients, is that doctors are so obsessed with lab results that they will let a patient continue in a state of misery rather than defy the lab studies. For example, suppose a patient takes a natural thyroid drug and finds that she feels more energetic, her skin is no longer dry and itchy, and she has a much better overall sense of wellbeing, yet no signs of too much thyroid hormone exist (like jitteriness, rapid heart beat, or arrhythmias).

Why would a doctor deny her a prescription? Because that’s how doctors are trained. It has been hammered in their heads that sticking to specific lab results is proper procedure. Doctors, in all too many cases, have lost the capacity to think and reason.

Cesium Maintains Alkalinity for Successful Cancer Treatment

Acid/Alkaline Balance

Otto Warburg - (1883-1970) won a Nobel Prize for showing that cancer thrives in an aerobic (without oxygen) or acidic conditions. Chemist Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize in 1931 for discovering the nature and mode of action of the respiratory enzyme. His work demonstrated that cancer cells replicate in the absence of oxygen. Several oxygenation methods have been proven capable of stopping the proliferation of cancer cells.

Otto Heinrich Warburg was born on October 8, 1883, in Freiburg, Baden. His father, the physicist Emil Warburg, was President of the Physikalische Reichsanstalt, Wirklicher Geheimer Oberregierungsrat. Otto studied chemistry under the great Emil Fischer, and gained the degree, Doctor of Chemistry (Berlin), in 1906. He then studied under von Krehl and obtained the degree, Doctor of Medicine (Heidelberg), in 1911. He served in the Prussian Horse Guards during World War I. In 1918 he was appointed Professor at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology, Berlin-Dahlem.

Acid/Alkaline Balance The second element is the acid/alkaline balance in the body. It is monitored by measuring the pH (the symbol for hydrogen ion concentration) which is regulated by the body's oxygen saturation level. The body must be slightly alkaline for its cells to be properly oxygenated.

The pH scale goes from zero to 14-zero being purely acid, 14 being purely alkaline and 7 being neutral pH. Without exception, people with cancer have a pH below 7.0, which means their tissues, their cells, are not being properly oxygenated. This condition is called acidosis.

People with a body pH over 7.4 do not have cancer because their cells and tissues are being properly oxygenated.

Contrary to current medical information, cancer is the easiest of all degenerative diseases to understand and is readily reversible without dangerous drugs and surgeries.

The body is constantly regulating the replacement of worn out cells while creating new cells to repair tissue damage.

Cancerous is the term applied to cells that reproduce in an unregulated manner until they form a tissue mass, or tumor.

In order to create a cancerous cell in the lab, technicians simply withhold oxygen from a healthy cell and it becomes cancerous within a few hours. Conversely, supplying the cancerous cell with more oxygen than was withheld from it causes that cancerous cell to die within a few hours.

An individual cell cannot be cured of cancer; once cancerous, the cell must be destroyed.

The natural way to accomplish the feat of destroying cancer cells is exposing them to oxygen. Increasing the amount of oxygen available to the cells is accomplished by elevating body pH through diet and exercise.

In cases where elevating body pH is critical, the most alkalinizing element known to man is cesium. Daily intake of cesium, with potassium, will quickly increase body pH. It has been demonstrated that cancerous cells cannot survive in a pH of 8.0.

Once cancerous cells have been destroyed, maintaining body pH at 7.4-7.5 will prevent cells from becoming cancerous.
